What Survives the Agent Era

Some genetic diseases are one misplaced full stop. The instruction is complete and correct on both sides of it, and the cell simply stops reading halfway. The obvious answer is to correct the typo, which means editing DNA. Tuesday, the team that left the typo alone and rebuilt the molecule that reads it, delivered as something you breathe in, and the forty days a single dose kept working.

No Pit, No Ponds: The Lithium Nobody Has to Dig For

Lithium is normally won by evaporating brine in ponds for a year, or by digging an open pit. Beneath California's Salton Sea sits brine hot enough to run a power station and loaded with dissolved lithium, and it has been pumped up and pushed back down for decades. Wednesday, the plants now taking the metal out on the way past, and why the waste stream turned out to be the product.

Quantum's Problem Is Too Many Qubits, Not Too Few

Error correction works. That was settled this year. What nobody puts on a slide is the exchange rate: roughly a thousand fragile qubits to buy one reliable one, which lands a useful machine at millions against the few thousand that exist. Weeding Robots Needed a New Brain for Every Crop. Not Any More

A weeding robot has to decide, plant by plant at several kilometres an hour, which green thing is the crop and which is the weed that looks exactly like it. That used to mean a separate trained model for every crop, every growth stage and every region. Saturday, one model for all plants, corrected by the farmer with three photographs on a tablet, and what still has not been measured.
